This week in Tabloid Town, Spider Man actress Kirsten Dunst has been forced to “speak out” about the time she recently spent in rehab facility, Cirque Lodge Treatment Centre. And -  surprise, surprise - the tabloid media were not happy.

Instead of publicly stating (what the world media had decided was) the obvious in a, “Hi, my name is Kirsten and I’m an alcoholic slash drug user”, Dunst, disappointed them by announcing this week that she was seeking treatment for being depressed, and that she was not a drunk!

What is amusing to Savvy is that while Dunst’s management never confirmed that the starlet was entering the facility for “drug and alcohol issues”, it was simply assumed by Paparazzi & Co (who are of course known for their impressive and incredibly accurate investigative journalism) that no-one in Hollywood had any other types of problems.

Ever since Dunst has returned from rehab with her bar-hopping ways still intact, the tabloids have been in a tizz, lapping up the chance to publicly ‘name and shame’ yet another celebrity for failing to maintain (or even try to maintain) her sobriety.  The only problem being that Dunst never said she was a drunk… unless it’s an administration error? Perhaps they just got confused trying to spell her last name?

“I didn’t go to Cirque Lodge for alcohol abuse or drug abuse. I went there for depression. I was struggling and I had the opportunity to go somewhere and take care of myself,” Dunst said to E-online.

Presumably, it’s for this reason that the good-time girl, who has constantly come under attack for having too good a time in her post-rehab days decided to speak out about the not-so-good times. Dunst has been constantly snapped by photographers drinking at a bevy (excuse the pun) of venues since the day she busted back onto the social seen. According to one on-line magazine, Dunst was  “beyond tipsy after leaving NY venue, The Electric, after her recent 26th birthday.”

Needless to say it’s for this reason Dunst decided to set the record straight so she can presumably party in peace right?

The only problem being that alcohol is a depressant, so it’s generally not advised for the depressed. Believe it or not , gin and tonic is actually not the tonic for people with mental illness.  In any case, it’s a good idea to turn to therapy instead of the bottle.

“There's been a lot of misrepresentation about what is going on in my life, and it's been very painful for my friends and family," added Dunst. "Depression is pretty serious and should not be gossiped about."

If only the media felt the same way. Determined to find out that she is also a drunk (presumably because it’s more newsworthy) the rehab witch hunt has continued.

The Star Magazine reported “that Cirque Lodge usually doesn't treat patients suffering from just depression - only if they also have some type of chemical dependency.”

Other celebrity journalists followed suit in the chase.

The self-proclaimed Queen of the Media, Perez Hilton, is reported on his blog as saying, "Cirque Lode would refer you somewhere else if it's just depression."  Savvy can only assume that this apparent source had been 'on the source' as it's the only excuse that could cover saying such a ridiculous thing.

“Just depression” more accurately is a mental illness that tortures its patients often starting in adolescence and carrying on through adulthood is in fact extremely serious.

“I wonder who to believe?” touts Perez in response. “Our bet is that Dunst was probably there for something more than depression.”

Dear readers, don’t you just love someone who refers to himself in the third person?  Not to point fingers but the term “our bet” implies that he has company.  Maybe it is Perez who should be looking to be referred somewhere else?

After all, someone that thinks Dunst would need “something more than depression” to seek help, an illness that leads many wonderful people across the world to suicide, is clearly, bloody crazy.

As long as someone gets help does it really matter what the title of their illness is or what path or place they go to deal with it? Savvy’s response to this media tirade against Dunst and the journalists who have stoked the fires of attack is this: grow up and get a life, or seek help!!!!

I appreciate very much the tone of your article, you are quite correct. I think Kirsten will be fine when all is said and done but 'Hollywood' & 'stardom' are not easy gigs.
She's an enormous talent and a charming girl, I wish her well.
