Are Avril Lavigne's 15 minutes of fame nearly up? We inspect the Canadian pop star’s controversial career.

Avril Lavigne, aka Avril Whibley, cancelled her San Diego concert this week, reportedly because of excessive partying in Vegas the day before.

According everyone’s dear friend Perez, the lead singer of her support band Boys Like Girls, Martin Johnson, reportedly said he and Avril “got so wasted last night in her suite” chasing shooters.

Hey, nothing wrong with having a few drinks – or a lot – but drinking on a school night is not usually recommended. Notice I said “usually.”

When asked what she is most likely to get busted for, Lavigne once said, “I’ve been known to run around naked when I’m trashed. So maybe indecent exposure. Actually, I’d probably be arrested for disturbing the peace. One time I was drinking whiskey, and I was so loud someone called the fire department.”

Originally, the San Diego concert was “postponed” with throat problems cited as the reason, but the concert was not rescheduled, perhaps due to poor ticket sales. At least one radio station resorted to giving away tickets for one of her tour stops. Maybe her tween fans have (gasp) outgrown her…

Admittedly, she’s hot and she can sing a lot better than some of these lip-sync queens, but we’re thinking that maybe her 15 minutes of fame are ticking to a close. At least until she appears on one of those celebrity has-been shows or gets her mug shot on TMZ.com. Let’s hope she knows when to cut her losses and become a respectable lounge act.

We can’t help but think there are lots of singers out there who are prettier, more talented and definitely ones with a better attitude. Lavigne was quoted as saying she didn’t like it that her fans dressed like her, which prompted fellow singer Hillary Duff to comment on how she should take it as a compliment. Lavigne shot back, calling Duff “a goody-goody.”

Lavigne pours on the punk rocker act, or perhaps more accurately, the outfit. Think about it -- you never saw Johnny Rotten sing some tender pop ballad. This didn’t stop her from declaring herself “a Sid Vicious for a new generation.” (Bitch, please… Sid Vicious would stomp your ass! Literally.)

There are some who think she is an extreme personality. None other than Marilyn Manson once called her “weird”.

A critic for the Washington Post called Lavigne “a record label creation and a pre-fab pop star”, saying that much of her appeal “comes from how loathsome she is… Her narcissistic shtick enthralled the huge and mostly young female audience. Her best tunes have long flaunted ‘mean girl’ themes. All the way back to her first smash, the bouncy and melodic ‘Sk8er Boi’ from 2002, she’s shown she’s not content with just winning the boy; she has to win the boy and rub it in the face of the boy’s ex.”

Lavigne was accused of ripping off (and not crediting) the Rubinoos’ 1977 song I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend and turning it into her hit song Girlfriend. Well, a lot of creative talents are accused of not being the original innovators, right? Surely that’s the one example. Wrong!

In June 2007, a fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk told a magazine, “Avril doesn’t really sit and write songs by herself or anything. Avril will also cross the ethical line and no one says anything. That’s why I’ll never work with her again. I sent her a song two years ago called Contagious, and I just saw the tracklisting to this album and there’s a song called Contagious on it – and my name’s not on it. What do you do with that? See, I won’t (call the lawyers), I’ll just tell you. Art should not be subject to that kind of controversy.”

Lavigne responded by claiming she’d never heard the Rubinoos song and stated she was considering suing Kreviazuk for defamation. Kreviazuk eventually apologised while the Rubinoos retracted their allegations of plagiarism – makes you wonder what those attorneys talked about behind the scenes. The song I Don’t Have to Try also stirred up another controversy because of similarities between the song and Peaches’ 2003 song I’m the Kinda. Luckily for her, Peaches said she was happy she was influenced by her song – and happy for all of the people listening to her song again!

Lavigne offended proud locals at one of her Montreal concerts by declaring that she was “so happy to be back home in Ontario, Canada!” (Montreal is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec, not Ontario).

We can forgive poor geographic skills from someone who never graduated high school…, but in your own country?!

And what is it with these singers who have to be actresses too (Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Hillary Duff, Lindsey Lohan, Mandy Moore, etc.)? Mediocre singers pretending to be actresses tend to put out mediocre movies, so Lavigne was probably wise to stick to playing an animated animal. She made her film debut in the film Over the Hedge and appeared in an episode of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, performing Sk8er Boi with her band.

Surely this young woman have some redeeming qualities. Perhaps she cares about the less fortunate. Just consider this quote: “I am a very giving person. When the hurricane thing happened, I went to my closet, filled six boxes of stuff and said to my assistant, ‘Take it to Katrina!’ I also like to give stuff to people who are my ‘workers,’ especially if they don’t make much money.”

Savvy Says stick to the singing, lady. Opening your mouth for another other than song lyrics isn’t your strong suit. Even then, it often gets you into trouble.

I suspect we've not heard the last of her ... girl is hot ! A little crazy (that's youth at work) but talented and, well, drop dead gorgeous. What she'll have to learn is that very pretty girls who sing very very well are a dime-a-dozen. It's a tough business and a real grind to make it big .... I think she'll do O K.
