Savvy: End Down Voting
Posted on: 5/5/08 at 1:14 pm
In my humble opinion, the ability to down vote is making a mockery of your contest. The messes at the end of each month, since I joined in February 2008, are enough to turn one's stomach! And the constant blogging about this problem after the mess, make my stomach violently react.
Yes, I have the choice to take Savvy off my favorites list, but I thought I'd give the forums a chance to invite others to join with me in a request to you to fix this problem.
I think you made a great stride by trying to identify 'Zombie' accounts and eliminating their votes. I would suggest you continue those actions.
Unfortunately, to end down voting, you have to give up something.
The something I see is unique to your contest, and to change it may not be a decision you would want to make.
At first I had two suggestions: bullet voting or eliminate values with votes.
Bullet voting would allow a member to vote only once each day for the ISH of his or her choice. However, as I thought this solution through, I realized Savvy's most important goal is to become a networking site. Bullet voting would not encourage that goal.
Therefore, I'm left with my second alternative. Vote for as many ISH's each day, but eliminate any values attached to the votes. The ISH with the most votes at the end of the month wins.
I believe down voting is ugly and is tearing this site apart. I believe this type of voting, although it is not as appealing as giving your vote value, will bring a lot more harmony to this site.
Is it fairer? Only your comments to this will tell.

RE: Savvy: End Down Voting RE: Comments and Views To Date.

First, I want to thank all who have made comments to date. The comments are poignant and I think they will give Savvy a good feel for where the members stand.
Second, I noted that there were 75 views that did not make a comment to date. I encourage those members to make their views known, even if it is just yes or no to values associated with votes.
Respectfully, I disagree with some of the opinions expressed in the comments. Hopefully, these disagreements will be taken in the spirit of discussion, with the conclusion we agree to disagree.
I believe, if you find an error in what you are doing, you should change it, especially if it is hurting contestants who are working their backsides off that have been attracted to your site for a big money prize. Each of these contestants is counting on Savvy to keep this contest clean and fair. Yes, as I said in my previous post, Savvy is making strides to eliminate ‘Zombie’ accounts and they should continue to do so. But, in my opinion, I don’t think they have it under control.
Also, I don’t think we have all pure-of-heart members when it comes to winning a million dollars.
Why these opinions? Because of the precipitous swings in contestants’ scores at the end of the month that are unreasonable.
As a retired accountant, please bear with me for a little math. If a contestant receives two tens from fifty members, her score is 10. However, if five ‘Zombie’ accounts or dark-hearted members, hit her with two fives each, her score drops to 9.54 (100 votes x 10 + 10 votes x 5 = 1050/110 total votes = 9.54).
Tiger, if I remember correctly, on some of the days you posted the February results, the lead was measured in hundredths, not 4.6 tenths. Also, I believe everyone can do the math with other factors using this example.
I fully agree that voting different values on different aspects of a contestant’s performance is the way to judge, if there is a level playing field. I do believe that there is a level playing field at a diving contest and at the Olympics because you can see each judge’s vote, although subjective, and you can understand the final outcome. You may not agree, but you do know why.
However, I don’t believe we have a level playing field here at Savvy. My whole message is just that. Also, as I said in my previous post, if you want something, you have to give something. I’m for the level field and I’m willing to give up value voting for it to stop down voting.
