Chincoteague is more than just a quiet island strip off Virginia’s eastern shore\. This small, seven\-mile\-long island community has turned caring for wild ponies into a beloved American tradition that’s been drawing in visitors for over a century\. And though it’s truly a travel\-worthy experience, the area and event hasn’t been spoiled by over\-commercialization or heavy tourism\. Come take part in this unique local experience while never feeling like an outsider, and then go enjoy the laid\-back feel of this quintessentially American waterside town\. Here’s how:
## The History of the Chincoteague Pony Swim
Legend has it that in the 1600s a Spanish galleon loaded with gold and ponies sank around the Chincoteague and neighboring Assateague islands\. These ponies went overboard into the waters but swam ashore and survived\. Other legends say it was farmers who liked to let their horses graze freely on Assateague, but eventually they lost track of a few wanderers who then multiplied and roamed wild\.
No matter which legend you believe, a herd of roughly 150 ponies ended up roaming around in what’s now a protected wildlife refuge\. Once a year, groups would ride over to Assateague to brand the ponies and sell off a few\. In 1925 the event was formalized and referred to as Pony Penning Days, with proceeds going to benefit the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company\.
But things didn’t get exciting until writer Marguerite Henry attended one of the roundups in 1946, looking for inspiration for her book\. She ended up purchasing one of the ponies, naming it Misty, and writing an origin story about the animal, including the real\-life local Beebe family in the narrative\. Once her book, Misty of Chincoteague was published, readers began flocking to the annual Pony Swim to witness the journey and even purchase ponies of their own\.
Today, the Pony Swim is both a family tradition and a homecoming event for folks raised on Chincoteague\. It’s also a bucket list trip for fans of Misty of Chincoteague who’ve dreamt of experiencing the unique sight\.
## The Pre\-Swim Events
### Southern Herd Roundup \- Saturday, July 25th, 2026
The festivities kick off the Saturday before the \(Wednesday\) Pony Swim at the Southern Herd Roundup\. Saltwater Cowboys, as they’re affectionately called, hop on horseback and round up around 50 wild ponies on Assateague island, along with their 60\-70 foals\. They start around 7am and eventually move them all up into the South Corral in Assateague\.
How to attend: Park in the Woodland Trail parking lot or along the beach road to catch them entering the South Corral\. Just keep in mind that once the corral gates open for the ponies, you won’t be able to drive out of the lot until all the ponies are safely in the corral\. You can also visit the ponies anytime while they’re in the South Corral up until Wednesday morning\.
### Northern Herd Roundup \- Sunday, July 26th, 2026
The remainder of the ponies \(about 100 of them\) live up on the north side of Assateague\. Saltwater Cowboys herd them into the North Corral on Sunday morning, starting at around 6am\.
How to attend: While the North Corral isn’t accessible during the roundup, you can hike the three\-mile service road trail to the corral once the ponies are safely inside\. Park in the Wildlife Loop lot to access\.
### The Beach Walk \- Monday, July 27th, 2026
Starting at 6am on Monday morning, the Saltwater Cowboys move the ponies in the Northern Corral to the beachfront and walk them south along the Atlantic to meet up with the ponies in the Southern Corral\.
How to attend: Drive to the beachfront at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge \(opens at 5am that day\) and park in the recreational beach parking lot\. If you hike or bike to the event, you can access the beach via the Swan Cove Trail\.
### Pony Vet Checks \- Tuesday, July 28, 2026
Every single pony gets a specialized checkup by a veterinarian to ensure they’re capable of the big swim\.
How to attend: Ponies can be viewed at the Southern Corral on Assateague\. To access, park in the Woodland Trail Parking Lot\.
## The Pony Swim \- Wednesday, July 29th, 2026
Anywhere from 40,000\-50,000 people come each year to watch the Saltwater Cowboys swim the ponies across the Assateague Channel to the east side of Chincoteague Island\. The cowboys, about half of which are fire department members, line them up at dawn and around 8am spectators gather to watch\. Once the Coast Guard deems the waters safe, a flare goes off and the ponies plunge into the water\. In about five minutes they’ll make it to the other side, running up on the shore to a raving applause\.
The first pony to come to shore is named King or Queen Neptune and is later given away in a raffle drawing at the carnival grounds that same day\. You can purchase raffle tickets prior to the swim at the carnival, or on the day of the event \(sellers walk around the crowds while you wait for the swim\)\. After the swim, the ponies get some time to rest and recover and then the cowboys wrangle them back up to parade them down Main Street to the carnival grounds\.
### Where to watch the swim
The main spot to catch them is at the Veterans Memorial Park\. The festival puts up a big screen in the park with a live feed for those who can’t catch a good view\. Just keep in mind there is no seating provided\.
If you’re looking to catch the ponies come ashore, head south of the park to Pony Swim Lake\. Again, space is limited, there is no seating, and you’ll likely be standing in marshland\. Come prepared with waterproof footwear\.
To see the ponies up close, rent a kayak or book a boat tour for extra comfort and seating\. Again, with high demand you’ll want to reserve these months in advance\. Check out [this page]() for a list of tour operators\.
### How to get there
There is no parking available at Veteran’s Memorial Park, and parking isn’t cheap near hot viewing spots \(around $25\)\. Passes must be booked well in advance \(think a full year\!\) as space is extremely limited\. Luckily the town of Chincoteague offers their free Pony Swim Shuttle/trolley service starting at 7am and running between various locations on the island and the park\. The best place to catch it is the Chincoteague Municipal Center, especially if you’re just in town for the day\.
### Attending with kids
The Pony Swim and all events surrounding it are super family friendly\. The wait times and crowds can of course be inconvenient, so bring along water, sunscreen, and snacks for kiddos\. Most areas near the swim don’t have restrooms so either book a boat tour or make sure everyone has a bathroom break before heading out\.
### Insider tip: wait until the swim back
Want to avoid the crowds? Skip the Wednesday swim and watch the second swim back to Assateague on Friday\. You’ll have way better views for pictures and less people to deal with\. The swim events start at 7am and usually end around 11am\.

Most folks head to Chincoteague for Pony Swim season in July, which means more activities but bigger crowds\. It’s also the warmest month of the year, with highs in the upper 80s, so be prepared to get some sun\. Bring along your sunscreen and bug spray for exploring marshlands and riding out the Pony Swim bite\-free\. Fall and spring are also great times to visit, especially if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy crisp coastal air and a more local vibe\. In winter, however, the town sort of shuts down with businesses either closing for the season or running minimal hours\.

Chincoteague is a small island, so you’re never too far from activities\. Fireman’s Carnival
The Fireman's Carnival began as a way to raise funds for the volunteer fire company \(after a string of devastating fires, the community started up a volunteer fire department\)\. The carnival runs on the weekends starting a few weeks prior to the swim, and is open from 6\-10pm\. The night of the swim, auctioneers announce the winner of the King or Queen Neptune from the Carnival bandstand around 7:30pm\. You have to be present to win\.
The Pony Auction
The Pony Auction is held early Thursday morning \(the day after the swim\) at the Carnival grounds\. While the auction typically doesn’t get started until 8am, bidders and viewers are allowed in as early as 6am\. The auction usually lasts about four hours and it's exciting to watch the emotion of bidders, chasing their dreams of owning a pony of their own\. You can park at the carnival but we recommend walking, biking, or taking the shuttle\.
Misty of Chincoteague screenings

Chincoteague Island Blueberry Festival
This impressive arts and crafts festival takes place at the end of July, leading up to the Pony Swim festivities\. Along with non\-stop live music and epic breakfasts and lunches, festival goers can enjoy everything from handmade jewelry to blueberry\-filled shortcakes and ice creams\. The festival is held at the Chincoteague Center on Community Drive\. Parking is limited, so bike, walk, or trolley/shuttle over if you’re able\.
Wildlife exploration
The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge offers numerous opportunities to experience its over 14,000 acres of unspoiled marshes and maritime forests\. Go deep\-sea fishing on a scenic boat cruise\. Or discover bird watching: the refuge is a habitat for more than 300 migratory birds and waterfowl, as well as other wildlife and plants\. Visitors can also hike, bike, enjoy wildlife photography, or take a horseback ride along the beach\.

Explore NASA exhibits on rockets, Earth science, and the history of NASA missions here at the Chincoteague’s very own space center\.
